Rudhramadevi quick movie review: Anushka Shetty’s period war film is no Baahubali but is engaging nevertheless!

The film has finally hit screens today

Anushka Shetty’s Rudhramadevi  directed by Gunashekhar in 3D also stars Rana Daggubatti, Allu Arjun, Nithya Menen and Prakash Raj. Seeing the trailers and songs, the non-Telugu audiences could have an impression that this is also a fantasy film on the likes of this year’s biggest blockbuster Baahubali – The Beginning, and Vijay’s dismal Puli. So what is the film all about? Our critic Subramanian Harikumar is watching the film at a theatre right now and has send us what he thought about the exciting looking 3D film.

Subramanian says, “Rudhramadevi is a biopic based on the life of great queen of Kakateya dynasty. The story unfolds as the ruler of Kakateya kingdom Raja Ganpati Dev raises his only daughter as a prince to keep the enemies and detractors away from attacking the throne which has no successor. Anushka Shetty plays princess Rudhramadevi who is disguised as prince Rudradev. After mastering the required skills to fight the war, Rudradev returns back to kingdom from exile and takes over the welfare of the masses. Even though she is brought up as a prince, Anushka falls in love with Chalukya Bhadra played by Rana Daggubati. Allu Arjun plays rebel Gonna Ganna Reddy, who loots wealthy traders and gives the money to the poor. But just before the interval, Rudradev’s identity comes out in the open as everyone gets to know that the heir to throne is actually a woman and not a man.”
Anushka Shetty comes up with incredible performance as the warrior princess disguised as prince. Her fighting skills and her underwhelming make up is impressive. She also portrays the vulnerability of a woman perfectly. Allu Arjun makes a stylish entry as the rebel and has some of the best dialogues in the film. Rana Daggubati aptly plays the supporting role to Anushka in the film. Overall, the narrative of the film is taut as we are hooked to the film with plethora of characters. And what really surprised me is that the VFX effects are not as shoddy as they looks in the trailer. While its visuals and story telling can never match Baahubali standards, the efforts deserve to be lauded. 3D effect is wasted as there is not a single scene in first half where 3D is impressive. VFX is nowhere near on par with Baahubali but engaging narration makes you forget these flaws. A lot of time is spent in establishing the plot and the length of the film will surely tests your patience. Lets hope that the second half is packed with war scenes and stunts as promised in the trailer.”
